A crouched racer at full lean, in loose pen and ink
Chin almost on the tank, elbows in, the rider in The Ton is giving it everything. It is a pen-and-ink drawing on cream paper of a cafe racer at full lean: round headlamp, low bars, long tank, spoked wheels and a chunky engine in the middle. The rider wears a full-face helmet and a jacket. Puffs of exhaust smoke curl out behind, and quick strokes under the wheels show the road rushing past.
The ink is loose and lively, with heavy black in the shadows and lighter hatching on the tank and engine. A cafe racer is a stripped-back road bike with low handlebars, so the rider tucks in just like this. Our page on what a cafe racer is tells you more. Black on cream suits most rooms, from a white-walled flat to a study full of dark wood.
Because the drawing sits in the middle of plain paper, the wider formats lose very little. On the poster the front tyre just touches the right-hand edge. On canvas, metal, wood and the framed canvas, the whole bike and its smoke are in view. A good gift for anyone who rides fast, or wishes they still did.
