Is 50x70 cm A3?

50 × 70 cm is larger than both A3 and A2. An A2 print will not fill a 50 × 70 frame on its own, but it can be displayed in one with a suitable mount.

Compare the paper sizes below. Frames and mounts add to the overall dimensions; the drawing is scaled for comparison, not shown at actual size on your screen.

The measurements

A-series paper sizes are specified by BS EN ISO 216. The figures below can be checked in the University of Cambridge paper-size reference.

A4210 × 29721.0 × 29.78.3 × 11.7
A3297 × 42029.7 × 42.011.7 × 16.5

50 × 70 cm500 × 70050.0 × 70.019.7 × 27.6

A 50 × 70 cm sheet has about 2.8 times the area of A3 and 40% more area than A2.

Similar proportions, different sizes

The A series uses a height-to-width ratio of approximately √2. Halving a sheet produces the next smaller A size with the same proportions, allowing for rounded millimetre dimensions. A 50 × 70 cm sheet has a ratio of 1.4, so its shape looks similar even though its dimensions differ.

If you already own a 50 × 70 frame

Check the frame's stated picture size and whether it includes a mount. A 50 × 70 cm poster suits a frame designed for that paper size. An A2 print is smaller: a suitable mount can bridge the gap and hold it in place. Trimming a smaller print cannot make it fill a larger frame.

Our framed prints are offered at A3 and A2. A 50 × 70 canvas is a different presentation: stretched canvas rather than a paper print inside a picture frame. Check the product page for the specification and current options.

Choose for the available space

Mark out the paper size on the wall with a paper template, then allow for the frame's outside dimensions if you plan to use one. Read the sizes and framing guide for format comparisons, or browse display and hanging advice.

Workshop notes

Questions, answered

Is 50x70 cm the same as A2?

+

No. A2 is 420 × 594 mm; 50 × 70 cm is 500 × 700 mm, with about 40% more area. A2 will not fill that larger frame by itself, but a suitable mount can accommodate the smaller print.

What A size is closest to 50x70 cm?

+

A2, at 420 x 594 mm, is the nearest below it, and A1 at 594 x 841 mm is the nearest above. 50x70 cm falls between the two and is neither.

How big is 50x70 cm in inches?

+

19.7 x 27.6 inches, taking an inch as 25.4 mm exactly. A3 is 11.7 x 16.5 inches and A2 is 16.5 x 23.4 inches.

Can I put a 50x70 print in an A2 frame?

+

A 50 × 70 print is larger than A2 by 8 cm in width and 10.6 cm in height. Cutting it to A2 would remove those margins and any artwork within them. Choose the matching paper size if you want to preserve the complete image.
