Motorcycle fuel cost calculator

Type how far you’re riding and how many miles to the gallon your bike does. You get the petrol you’ll use and what it costs, at this week’s average UK pump price or your own.

What will the ride cost?

£15.83

100.0 miles (160.9 km) at 50.0 mpg (5.6 litres per 100 km) uses about 9.1 litres (2.00 gallons). At 174.07p a litre, the UK average petrol price for the week of 26 October 2026, that is £15.83, or 15.8p a mile.

UK average pump price for petrol from GOV.UK weekly road fuel prices, week of 26/10/2026. Checked against GOV.UK weekly road fuel prices on 30 October 2026. 1 gallon = 4.54609 litres (Weights and Measures Act 1985).

How to use it

Put in the distance and pick one way or there and back. Then your bike's fuel economy, in miles per gallon or litres per 100 km. The price starts at the latest average UK pump price for petrol, and you can type the price on your local forecourt instead. Planning a ride-out? Add the number of riders to see the group's fuel bill. The link in your address bar keeps your ride, so you can send it round.

Distance, mpg and the price a litre: that is all the sum needs.

Where the price comes from

The government publishes the average UK pump price for petrol and diesel every week, on GOV.UK's weekly road fuel prices. We read the latest figures every night, so the calculator moves with them. Below the tool you'll see the week the price is for and the date we last checked it. If a check fails, the calculator keeps the last good price and says it is being re-checked.

How it is worked out

StepExample: 100 miles at 50 mpg
Gallons = miles ÷ mpg100 ÷ 50 = 2 gallons
Litres = gallons × 4.546092 × 4.54609 = 9.09 litres
Cost = litres × price a litre9.09 × 170p = £15.46

That example uses a round 170p a litre to show the sum, not today's price. A UK gallon is 4.54609 litres, as the Weights and Measures Act 1985 defines it. A US gallon is smaller, so an mpg figure from an American source will look lower for the same bike. For litres per 100 km, the litres are the kilometres ÷ 100 × that figure.

Your own mpg, from your own riding, gives the truest answer.

Getting a good mpg figure

The best figure is your own. Fill the tank to the brim, set the trip meter to zero and ride as you normally would. Then fill to the brim again. Divide the miles by the litres you put in and multiply by 4.54609. That is your mpg for the way you ride. Running an older bike? Our guide to E10 and classic motorcycles covers which petrol to use.

Questions answered

How do I work out the fuel cost of a motorbike ride?

Miles ÷ mpg gives gallons. Multiply by 4.54609 for litres, then by the price a litre. 100 miles at 50 mpg is 9.09 litres.

Is the price in the calculator up to date?

It is the latest weekly average UK pump price for petrol from GOV.UK, read every night. The page shows the week it is for and when we last checked it.

Are UK and US mpg the same?

No. A UK gallon is 4.54609 litres and a US gallon is smaller, so use a UK mpg figure here.
